Heart-rate zones, Max HR, and LTHR

Set heart-rate zones using maximum heart rate, lactate threshold, or your own boundaries.

What the terms mean

Heart-rate zones divide your effort into useful ranges. They can help you pace an easy ride, hold a steady training effort, or see how hard a completed ride was. The zones are only as useful as the reference value they are based on.

  • Maximum heart rate (Max HR) is the highest rate your heart can reach during an all-out effort. It is personal and is not necessarily the highest number from a recent ride.
  • Lactate threshold heart rate (LTHR) is an estimate of the highest heart rate you can sustain for a long, hard effort before fatigue begins to rise quickly.
  • A heart-rate zone is a range of beats per minute. Lower-numbered zones represent easier efforts; higher-numbered zones represent harder efforts.

Configure zones

  1. Open More > Heart rate and power zones.
  2. Under Heart rate zones, choose Maximum heart rate, LTHR, or Manual boundaries.
  3. Enter the reference bpm or increasing Z2-and-higher boundaries.
  4. Save.

How BikeNet uses your zones

During a ride, BikeNet can show your current zone, your percentage of Max HR or LTHR, and time in zone. Afterward, the ride summary shows how your time was distributed across the zones.

BikeNet saves a copy of the zone settings with each ride. If your fitness changes and you update the settings later, earlier rides keep the zones that were in use when they were recorded.
